Police officers have an important job. Often, dedicated officers purchase their own gear to better serve their communities, and many gun stores recognize this by offering special rates to those who serve and protect. If you’re not sure that you have all of the police gear or tactical equipment you need for the job, consider this checklist.

5 Pieces of Police Gear Every Officer Should Buy

1. Guns

Officers are typically supplied a standard-issue gun by their department, most commonly the Glock 22. A backup weapon can come in handy when one piece fails or needs cleaning. You may also need an extra weapon in situations where your main gun is taken. Consider where you want to place it. A shoulder rig makes the firearm easy to access while placing it on the ankle makes it almost undetectable.

2. Ammunition

You’ll need extra ammo to go with your backup gun. Besides, it’s good practice to carry at least two spare magazines of ammo while on duty.

3. Holsters

4. Boots

Boots are an essential part of tactical gear that can also become worn over time. The right pair of police boots is durable and comfortable, allowing officers to perform their duties on long shifts.

5. Flashlights

The standard-issue flashlight can easily get misplaced or stop working, making a backup a necessity. Look for flashlights made from hard materials such as aluminum in case you need to use it as a weapon or to break glass. Blinding light settings are also useful for temporarily stunning suspects.
