One of the best parts of the holidays is the bounty of food to feast upon. Unfortunately, certain foods can be detrimental to someone with a dental bridge or crown, especially one that’s recently been implemented. Knowing what to avoid during the holidays will ensure a comfortable, pain-free, and festive season. Below, a few of the foods that are potentially harmful to bridges and crowns are discussed in more detail.

3 Holiday Foods That Could Be Problematic for  Bridges or Crowns

1. Candy

From candy canes and chocolate kisses to homemade fudge and peanut brittle, there’s no shortage of candy come the holiday season. But the stickier a candy is, the more damage it can do to a dental bridge or crown. Sticky candies, like caramel, taffy, and gummy treats, can pull a dental crown or bridgework out of place. Also, these candies aren't easily washed away by saliva, so they tend to stick more, and increase the chances the sugar will cause tooth decay and cavities.

2. Ice Cream

dental bridgesThe holidays are the time of year that ice cream manufacturers sell seasonal flavors, like peppermint, pumpkin spice, and eggnog. But if you're an ice cream fan, it may be best to avoid it until your new crown or bridge has had some time to settle in. New dental work can leave the mouth feeling especially sensitive to colder foods, and your gums may not have had sufficient time to heal from the procedure. Eating ice cream could be a painful experience, so go easy on your mouth and steer clear for the time being.

3. Nuts

Nuts are a staple on many holiday hors d'oeuvres tables. A healthy and protein-packed snack, nuts are the enemy of a new bridge or crown. Any foods that are hard and crunchy pose a threat, and nuts are at the top of that list. If you only have a temporary crown, steer clear of nuts entirely; one wrong bite could dislodge the whole thing and make for a very painful holiday.
