Gymnastics season has arrived once again. Whether you’re starting out as a beginner in the sport or have been competing professionally for years, you’re part of a long, proud tradition dating back to the ancient Greeks. See a brief history on competitive and recreational gymnastics below to understand how the sport has become what you experience today.

The Long Tradition & Transformation of Gymnastics

The Origins of the Practice

The ancient Greeks were passionate about competition and sports, and their athletes used gymnastics to hone their physical skills. They developed a training regimen to improve strength, coordination, flexibility, and balance. They called this practice “gymnazein,” or “to exercise naked,” as they undressed to exercise as a tribute to the gods. The Romans later adopted a similar practice to train their military. The use of gymnastics for military purposes declined with the fall of Rome.

How Gymnastics Became a Sport

gymnasticsIn Germany in the late 1700s, primary school instructors and education reformers reintroduced gymnastics to encourage physical activity and build strength in students. They developed equipment that is still used in gymnastics today, such as the beam, parallel bars, and vault. During the 1800s, the practice spread across Europe. It was especially popular in Sweden, where practitioners developed a unique style that emphasized grace and flexibility over raw power. The sport was mostly practiced individually or in private clubs.

Gymnastics as Competition

In the 1880s, the international popularity of gymnastics continued to grow as European immigrants introduced the sport to the U.S. Gymnastics was added as an Olympic sport in 1896 for men and 1924 for women. Before long, formal training programs designed to attract and train top athletes opened across the world. The sport has continued to evolve ever since, with changing scoring metrics and increasingly challenging acrobatic techniques.
