Halloween might be aimed at children, but as any adult with a sweet tooth knows, this holiday is a favorite among big kids as well. While you might be looking forward to the Halloween haul ahead, try not to go overboard. The excess sugar can wreak havoc on your waistline and increase your chances of cavities, resulting in unwanted emergency trips to the dentist. Follow these tips to keep yourself in check.

5 Tips for Holding Back on Halloween candy

1. Don't Stock up on Your Favorites

When shopping for trick-or-treaters, get more of the candies you dislike. Just buy one bag of your favorites, and give away as much as you can when kids stop by.

2. Wait to Shop

Buying Halloween candy weeks in advance means temptation is sitting in your cupboard for that much longer. Wait until shortly before October 31 to cross this item off your shopping list. Resolve not to open any bags until you’re prepared to serve trick-or-treaters.

3. Don’t Go Hungry

dentistAn empty stomach can leave you craving the easiest and tastiest items at hand—candy. Ward off sugar cravings by eating meals rich in protein and fiber to help you feel full for longer.

4. Savor Your Sweets

Don’t have a bag of Halloween treats at hand while watching TV or surfing online. Mindless eating means you’ll consume more than you realize. Set aside your sweets to savor after dinner. Select one piece and give it your full attention. You may discover it’s enough to satisfy you.

5. Clean Your Teeth

Brush and floss right after you’re done with your daily indulgence. Once you’ve completed the oral hygiene routine recommended by your dentist, you’ll have an incentive to avoid further snacking.
