Dentures can complete your smile and boost your confidence, so it’s important to keep them in solid condition. Just as oral hygiene is essential for your natural teeth, regular denture cleaning will keep your dental piece free of stains and damage. In addition to talking to your dentist, consider the following tips for keeping your dentures shining.

How to Properly Clean Your Dentures

1. Rinse After Eating

Food particles can get stuck in your dentures while you eat, so be sure to rinse them thoroughly after meals. To do so, remove your dentures and gently rinse them in running water. You might consider placing a soft towel in the sink or filling it with water to protect your dentures if they slip from your hand. Handle dentures gently to avoid damaging the clasps.

2. Soak Overnight

dentistBy soaking your dentures in water or denture solution, you can remove any stains or bacteria lingering on the surface. This habit will also help the dentures keep their shape. Fill a glass with warm water or a solution, and make sure that the dentures are completely submerged. For some pieces, a dental professional will recommend soaking for just a few minutes and then storing in a dry container overnight.

3. Brush Daily

Most dentists recommend brushing your dentures at least once per day. Using a nonabrasive cleanser, gently brush the surface of the dentures with a soft toothbrush. Be sure to remove any particles from the denture grooves, as well as any remaining adhesive. Since most toothpastes can scratch the surface of dentures, talk to your dentist about which cleaning solution to use.

4. Clean Your Mouth

Take the time to thoroughly clean your mouth after removing your dentures at night. Using a soft toothbrush, remove any food particles and denture adhesive from your natural teeth, tongue, gums, and the roof of your mouth. You may need to rinse several times to fully clean your mouth.

5. See Your Dentist

Regular dental appointments will ensure that your dentures are functioning well. During these appointments, your dental provider will check the fit, structure, and condition of your dentures. They will likely clean the piece as well. You will also have a chance to ask your dentist any questions about your dentures or point out any discomfort.
