Do you admire the lush, full look and feel of planted fish tanks? The aquarium experts at Gerber's Tropical Fish love these environments, too. Not only are aquarium plants beautiful, but they provide natural filtration. When it comes to creating compelling and functional aquascapes, however, there is a learning curve.

If you’d like to create an aquascape, make sure to follow these steps:

  • Choose The Right Plants: Even though it may be tempting, do not pick up the first plants you see, no matter how pretty they are. The plants you choose must be compatible with each other. Know all plants inside and out before you get them. Make sure you are fully aware of the habitat they need to be in to thrive.
  • Examine These Plants Thoroughly: Did you know that algae, snails, and other specimens can travel into your tank by way of plants? While you can remove algae-infected leaves and take off snails with your fingers, removing snail eggs is more difficult. To prevent against transporting these specimens into your fish tank, place new plants in quarantine for a few days, observing them with a close eye before you introduce them to your main aquascape.
  • Choose The Right Fish: Avoid goldfish, Koi, Gouramis, and African lake Cichlids, as these fish compulsively eat plants and dig roots. Also, know that large fish will tear apart delicate plants with their body movements.

Plants are more than just fish tank accessories. They are living, breathing things, and they need to be handled with care. When creating your dream aquascape, know that you can craft the perfect planted fish tank. The trick is to take your adventure one step at a time, to be knowledgeable, and to handle all living beings with care.
