Neglecting basic lawn care during fall can impede grass health for months to come. If you want a lush, verdant lawn come springtime, some autumn investment in your landscaping can help your grass emerge bright and healthy after winter. The following guide outlines a few lawn care steps to take to ensure a vibrant yard when the weather warms up.

Autumn Lawn Care Guide

1. Rake

Piles of leaves can be fun to jump and play in for a little while. If you don’t clean them up, however, they will block the lawn from the light and vital nutrients it needs to survive. Leaves can also trap excessive moisture, which promotes pests and leads to decay. To maintain a thriving lawn, rake and remove leaves as often as possible.

2. Water

Increased rainfall doesn’t mean that you should halt watering altogether. At minimum, lawns require about an inch of water per week to remain sufficiently nourished. If you’re not sure how much water your grass gets, install an easy-to-read rain gauge.

3. Mow

If you let your grass grow too long during the winter months, the roots may not receive the nutrients they need and the blades may mat, rot, and mold. Up until the first below-freezing temperature of the season, continue to mow your lawn on a regular basis. Lawns should consistently remain at a height of 2.5 to 3 inches for optimal health.

4. Fertilize

During fall, your lawn could use an extra nutrient boost. This season, apply a nitrogen-heavy fertilizer, which will help prevent the roots from freezing and provide plenty of nutrients to ensure the blades revive come springtime.
