From running a hot bath to doing laundry, you rely on your water heater year-round. In the winter months, however, your heater’s efficiency and proper functioning become even more imperative. To keep it in top shape through the frigid months ahead, be sure to follow these vital maintenance steps before the end of fall.

Plumbing 101: 3 Water Heater Steps This Fall

1. Insulate

Many new water heaters have built-in insulation that prevents unnecessary heat loss. Older models, however, may need a bit of support to maintain optimal efficiency during the winter months. If your water heater is older than a few years, purchase a tank cover to protect the heater itself, and also wrap padding around the connecting pipes to avoid costly energy expenditures. If you’re not sure how to size the cover, ask a plumbing professional.

2. Inspect the Anode Rod

3. Clean Out Tank

Hot water heaters should be drained at least once a year to eliminate sediment buildup and prevent system malfunctions. To drain the tank, switch off the gas, water, and power supply. Then, attach a hose to the drain valve and let it drain. If you notice significant calcification or aren’t sure how to tackle this task, always contact a plumbing professional for support.
