In emergency situations, a fire extinguisher can be a valuable resource that can help control the flames. However, extinguishers will sometimes experience problems that prevent them from functioning properly—putting occupants’ safety in harm’s way. That’s why the National Fire Prevention Association® (NFPA) requires commercial property owners to have their equipment professionally inspected and certified once a year. If you’re unfamiliar with the process, here are a few criteria your inspector will look at.

Fire Extinguisher Inspector’s Checklist

Proper Placement

First, the inspector will verify that fire extinguishers are placed at 75-foot intervals on every floor. They must also be within 30 feet of commercial kitchen areas. In addition, the equipment must be highly visible.

Extinguisher Charge

fire extinguishersFor extinguishers to function properly, they must be fully-charged to ensure that the substance inside will have enough pressure to cover all the flames. Most devices feature a button indicator or pressure dial showing their current status.

Physical Damage

To ensure the fire extinguisher is still functional, inspectors will evaluate them for signs of use or physical damage, including detached hoses, unfastened pull pins, broken tamper seals, and dented casing. Typically, if there is physical damage, the unit must be replaced.

Inspection Tag Date

Finally, the inspector will look at the dates on the extinguisher’s inspection tag. If there is no proof that the device has been inspected within the past year, re-certification may not be possible. If the inspection is successful, the tag is updated with the most recent assessment date.
