When people call for garbage disposal repair, it’s not unusual that the issue at hand was caused by improper use. These appliances require certain care to remain in top working order and promote functioning plumbing. Here are a few do’s and don’ts to follow to keep your appliance in top shape for years to come.

Do:

Run the cold water.

Pouring hot water into the garbage disposal while running it can cause grease to clog the drain. Instead, run it with cold water to minimize the potential for these problems and encourage everything in the drain to move downward into the sewer or septic tank.

Add dish soap.

Soap is slippery and can make for an excellent mixer as you siphon scraps into the garbage disposal. Adding a little soap with each batch of scraps can make them go down easier and promote cleanliness while improving the smell.

Use the trash can.

Don’t:

Forget to clean the disposal.

You can mitigate the risk of garbage disposal damage by simply cleaning the appliance on a weekly basis. Do so by grinding up ice cubes, vinegar, and citrus to clean the blades and add a fresh scent.

Pour grease down the drain.

If you make something greasy, don’t pour leftover oil and fats down the drain. These substances can build up and clog the disposal, as well as the pipes. Plus, hot grease is dangerous and could overheat the disposal and harm the motor. Instead, pour these substances into containers before placing them in the trash.

Reach into it with your hands.

If something slips into the disposal, don’t stick your hand inside to retrieve the item. Even if the disposal isn’t on at the moment, you could injure yourself on the blades.
