Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipes with threaded fittings provide a reliable solution for a variety of construction applications. However, many homeowners attempt DIY installations and experience problems due to improper application. PVC supply professionals explain the do’s and don’ts of PVC assembly to help you do the job right the first time.

Don’t

Overtighten joints.

Don’t make the joints too tight. Many people turn the joints too many times to ensure they are tight enough but the result may crack the pipe. Tighten them by hand and turn three times at most. If you’re unsure as to how many times you should tighten the joints, stop by a PVC supply shop, where staff members can demonstrate how to properly tighten the joints.

Glue the wrong pieces in the wrong places.

The last fitting should have a bit of wiggle room, typically where the vertical run meets a horizontal one so that attachments will fit snugly.

Do

Use sealant for threaded joints.

Use the right type of cement or primer to seal the piping. Read the label before purchasing to ensure it is designed for PVC. Keep in mind that chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC) is similar but not an acceptable substitute. Don’t use tape or Teflon paste either. Your local PVC supply shop can advise you on which sealants work best.

Test with a dry fit.

Before gluing the pipe, lay out the pieces to ensure they fit together well when connected and are cut to the proper length that you need. Mark the connections to remind yourself what goes where.
