From gluten intolerance to pollen, allergies affect millions of people. In many cases, particularly with environmental allergies, eye irritation, watering, or redness may be symptoms. Fortunately, optometrists say there are steps you can take to reduce discomfort. Here’s what causes eye allergies and what you can do about it.

What Causes Eye Allergies?

A variety of issues can contribute to eye allergies, including environmental factors and specific products. Environmental factors may be indoors, including dust, mold, smoke, and pet dander. Outdoor environmental factors include grasses, pollen, and air pollution, including exhaust or smoke. Many people experience seasonal allergies, particularly in spring when pollen is in the air.

What Can You Do About It?

The best way to prevent allergy symptoms is to avoid triggers. If you experience seasonal allergies, check the pollen count and try to avoid the outdoors on days when the count is high. Keep your home and office clean by sweeping and vacuuming regularly to remove indoor allergens and preserve indoor air quality. Also, clean or change the air filters in your HVAC system at least once per season.

Also, have your air ducts cleaned at least once a year to ensure they are clear of mold and debris. Make sure your home or office has adequate air circulation as well to prevent mold and mildew growth and improve air quality.

Avoid wearing contacts while you’re experiencing allergy symptoms as they may exacerbate irritation and itchiness. Avoid rubbing your eyes or scratching as well. There are many over-the-counter eye drops available to treat allergy symptoms, some of which may be effective. However, it’s important not to use these treatments for more than a few days. If they don’t provide relief, see your optometrist for a more effective solution.

Don’t let eye allergies drag you down. If you’re experiencing irritation, itchiness, pain, watery eye, or redness, visit your optometrist to determine the best treatment and ensure your symptoms are not the result of another underlying issue.
