When it comes to dental care, teeth extractions are rarely a first choice of treatment. Your dentist will try to save your tooth with a root canal, a dental crown, or other procedures. However, if the dentist determines that the tooth can’t be salvaged, or several teeth might put your oral health at risk, then the problem tooth will be extracted. Here are a few signs to look out for to determine if you need teeth extractions.

How You Can Tell If You Need Teeth Extractions

1. Severely Damaged

Teeth ExtractionsMany types of breaks and cracks can be repaired using modern dental techniques. But a tooth that splits near or below the gumline might need to be extracted. If the structure of the tooth is badly damaged in many places, removing it may be the best option to avoid infection.

2. Infected

A tooth is made up of the hard-outer enamel, a middle layer of softer dentin, and an inner chamber filled with nerves and other soft tissues called the pulp. When the pulp of a tooth is infected, it needs a root canal to remove the soft tissue and the infection. However, if an infection is left too long and grows too severe, even a root canal may not be enough. The tooth will have to be removed to avoid infecting other teeth.

3. Impacted

An impacted tooth pushes against or crowds surrounding teeth, often because it’s growing in the wrong direction. This is particularly common with wisdom teeth, but other teeth can be affected as well. The problem is usually identified in dental x-rays. An impacted tooth often needs to be removed to protect the alignment of the other teeth and the integrity of your bite.
