Chances are, you've had a cavity at one point or another. While it's commonly known that visiting the dentist and maintaining a good oral hygiene routine can help prevent them, there are many myths out there about this type of tooth decay. Here are some of the most common misbeliefs explained.

Common Myths About Cavities

1. If My Teeth Don't Hurt, They're Fine

Not all cavities present themselves as pain, but it is a common factor. Sensitivity to cold or hot foods and drinks can also be a sign. However, mild decay doesn't always cause symptoms, so visit the dentist at least twice a year to get checked.

2. Sugar-Free Soda Doesn’t Cause Cavities

While sugar is a contributor to cavities, it's not the only one. Sugar-free sodas still contain acid that can break down the enamel on teeth. If it's broken down too much, the tooth begins to weaken, making it more prone to decay.

3. Brown Spots on Teeth Are Cavities

Many people have brown spots on teeth, particularly molars, that could be discoloration from food or drink. Or, it could be a place where a cavity began to form, but the enamel rebuilt over it. If you're not sure, visit your dentist.

4. Kids Are More Prone Than Adults

dentistWhile children do get cavities, it's not necessarily more so than adults do—cavities don't discriminate. Adults can become prone to decay if they don't have a good oral hygiene routine, take medication that drys out their mouth, or other various factors.

5. Sensitivity Means Decay

While sensitivity can be a sign of tooth decay, that's not always the case. It could also be caused by weakened enamel or poor dental hygiene. More serious cases include chipped parts of the tooth, which opens up the nerve to air, food, or drink.
