The right interior painting choice goes beyond color. Different finishes offer a variety of sheens, and knowing what works best for the room in question will help you select a finish that is both functional for the room and beautiful for your décor. To better understand your options, below is a brief guide to the top finishes for interior painting.

Paint Finish Options

1. Matte/Flat

If you are looking for little to no sheen, choose matte paint. Similar to flat finishes but with a hint more shine, matte is smooth and works well to hide any imperfections due to its high pigment content. This makes it a top choice for living rooms, hallways, or dining rooms. Both matte and flat finishes are simple to touch up when there are chips or dings in the color. Matte and flat also work well on a ceiling since they absorb the light instead of reflecting it.

2. Eggshell

Another flatter finish with a slight shine is eggshell. Like matte, it masks dents and dings, and can work on areas ranging from the dining room to foyers and trim. Eggshell is easier to clean than matte without adding too much shine to the room and is often a top choice for commercial spaces.

Perfect for high traffic areas like playrooms, kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, and children’s rooms, satin leaves behind a subtle pearlescent finish when dry. Because it’s easy to clean, it’s also good for trim and molding. That being said, be cautious with touch-ups as they will stand out. It’s better to repaint the whole surface for a clean result.

4. Semi-Gloss

Semi-gloss interior painting reflects a good deal of light and results in a bright sheen when dry. Semi-gloss is quite durable and very easy to clean, making it ideal for kitchens and bathrooms as well as doors, trim, molding, and cabinets. It’s also strong against moisture and grease stains. Because imperfections will show up more, preparing the surface for painting is necessary.

5. Gloss

The most durable and brightest sheen of all is gloss or high gloss. With a high light reflection, gloss is shiny and offers an easy surface for scrubbing away grime. Because of this, gloss and high gloss work well on trim, woodwork, and doors. For interior walls, however, the extra shine is not recommended as it also highlights dings and dents.
