Pests make their presence known year-round, but they’re also fairly seasonal. That means what you encounter in the summer probably won’t be the same as what you experience in the fall. Here are five insects and critters you may notice trying to make their way indoors this season—and how to handle them.

A Guide to Pests Commonly Found in the Fall

1. Cockroaches

Like all pests, cockroaches seek food and thrive in dark, moist locations. They may dwell outside your home, but once they make their way inside, they can quickly multiply. Las Vegas has at least four different varieties, usually in a shade of black or brown. If you spot one of these dark critters scurrying across the floor, don’t wait for more to show up—they may carry potentially harmful pathogens, so it’s best to have an exterminator tackle the problem.

2. Scorpions

pestsHomeowners surrounded by desert are likely to spot the occasional scorpion or two in their home considering there are 25 different species in the state. Although they do feed on other pests, like cockroaches, their sting can be painful, which you may discover when reaching for something at the back of your cabinets or closets, where they like to hide. Clearing your home of clutter and sealing all small openings are, therefore, important preventative measures.

3. Spiders

Given that spiders are cold-blooded, it makes sense that they go in search of shelter when it gets colder outside. You can expect more than usual, then, during fall. Of the hundreds of varieties that live in Nevada, some are more dangerous than others. Have your exterminator set up a chemical boundary around your home’s exterior and move any firewood you may have stacked outside a few feet from your property.

4. Rodents

Rats and mice crave shelter just like any other pest. The problem is that they aren’t always visible—you may hear them moving behind walls or in the ceiling. They can even create nests and tear apart the insulation in your attic. Signs that you have an issue include minuscule bite marks in your food or clothing and droppings.

5. Stink Bugs

Stink bugs are an altogether too common pest in Nevada. They’re known for their unusual shield-like shape and their characteristic odor. When it’s warm outside, they feed on greenery—but come fall, they’re much more interested in warming up. Sealing the gaps around doors and windows can minimize their impact, but if they’re already inside you’ll need an expert to handle them.
