When a storm is in the forecast, you already know to check your windows to make sure they’re secured against rain and wind. But did you know that your electrical work is also at risk? Lightning presents a major hazard for both you and your electronics and can cause serious injury/damage and even death. From downed power lines to preventing electrical fires, here’s how to protect yourself and your electrical work during a thunderstorm.

How to Preserve Your Electronics During a Thunder Storm

1. Unplug Electronics

One of the best things to do during a storm is to unplug all of your electronics. You should also avoid using or making contact with appliances, equipment, and other electrical work during the storm. Never attempt to make an electrical repair, especially if the device got wet. You run the risk not only of electrocution but also of starting an electrical fire.

2. Back Up Your Files

If you know a major storm is coming, take precaution and back up your computer so important files are safe. This will provide you with peace of mind knowing your personal information is safe and accessible.

3. Use a Surge Protector Strip

In the case of a power surge, there’s equipment that can keep your electronics safe. As an extra precaution, many homeowners keep their major devices like computers, televisions, and routers plugged into a surge protector strip. These appliances are designed to protect your devices from voltage spikes.

4. Never Touch Downed Power Lines

If lightning or strong winds cause your power line to fall, do not move them. These lines are often still active and can cause electrocution if they make contact with any part of your body. If you see someone passed out near a power line, don’t touch them or attempt to help, as electricity can pass through them and harm you. Instead, call 911 right away.
