Residential moving can be a complicated process, and pets can add another layer of difficulty. Animals can sometimes be stressed by a move or get in the way of packing, loading, and unpacking. To help your furry friend through the process, follow these tips to keep them happy, healthy, and safe.

Taking Care of Pets During Residential Moving

1. Talk to Your Vet

Your pet should be as healthy as possible before your big move. Visit the vet to address any outstanding issues. Also make sure they’ll be ready to transfer your pet’s records to a new provider, and ask about options like sedatives which may help your dog or cat.

2. Keep One Room Unpacked

Choose one familiar room which your pet can be kept in. This is their area while you pack up the rest of the house. Leave this one room untouched for as long as possible. This way, your pet will have somewhere safe and familiar to retreat to while the rest of their surroundings change.

3. Don’t Let Your Pet Wander

On moving day, make sure your pet is closed in a crate and can’t get underfoot. Keep them in the car with you when you travel instead of using another vehicle, and don’t let them wander around during any stops along the way—they might get confused and run away.

4. Pack an Overnight Bag

Also, make sure that on the day of your move, you won’t get stuck without dinner and entertainment for your pet. A bag with their food, favorite toys, and if possible bedding should travel with you rather than going in a moving van.

5. Prepare a Room

In the same way that you left one room untouched in your old home, you need to choose a room in your new house which will be home base for your pet. Set the room up as quickly as possible with your pet’s favorite things, and place them in it. By letting them stay here at first, you can help them get introduced to the home gradually, one room at a time.
