During Halloween, there’s no shortage of cute pet costumes available online and in stores this season. While dressing your dog as a devil or the latest superhero might be tempting, keep in mind that not all animals are comfortable wearing clothes. For those pets, dog boarding is available, but if you believe your best friend is game for trick-or-treating alongside you or your kids, keep these Halloween do’s and don’ts in mind.

Do:

Keep it simple.

Dogs have been subjected to all-over color dyes, elaborate costumes, masks, and wigs, but that doesn’t mean it’s appropriate or comfortable for your pet. Keeping your dog’s costume simple will make them happier while still providing an Instagram-worthy photo. Limit it to only two or three pieces total.

Don’t wait until Halloween night to put on your dog’s costume. Try it on beforehand to test their temperament. They’ll signal whether they’d be better off in dog boarding while you’re out enjoying yourself, or if they’re content to wear the piece.

Don’t:

Force it.

Your pet will make it apparent if they’re uncomfortable wearing the outfit you’ve chosen. Watch for anxious yawns, whining, and refusal to move.

Limit your dog’s mobility.

Some pet owners make the mistake of trying to fit dogs into children’s clothes. Unfortunately, this can restrict your dog’s ability to walk and do their business. Instead, only purchase pet-specific costumes that have been measured to fit your dog.
