When it comes to decorating your home, adding mirrors can make a smaller space feel more spacious by creating a sense of depth. However, there are some guidelines to keep in mind before you incorporate them into your home’s aesthetics. Read more to see tips on how you should and shouldn't use mirrors.

How to Decorate Your Home With Mirrors—and How Not To

Do:

Place large mirrors in small spaces.

One of the biggest benefits of mirrors is how they can widen a small space, so select one focus-point piece that goes in a compact room. It'll reflect light and create an illusion of depth, making the room feel more comfortable and expansive.

Place them in narrow spaces.

mirrorsHallways and staircases often get left out of decoration, but a long mirror does great in those narrow spaces. Similar to above, that addition of depth will make the entire passageway feel larger.

Use mirrored furniture.

There are so many great mirrored pieces out there, but many people overlook this idea. Maybe it's a mirrored side table for your living room that adds a bit of depth, or a coffee table opens up the room. A functional piece of furniture with a mirrored surface will make the floor space feel larger.

Don't:

Add them to a kitchen.

While mirrors do great in bathrooms, they're not focal points in kitchens. Heat and steam from cooking—as well as water from the dishwasher or sink—can leave marks and streaks. Instead, place mirrors in the dining room for added elegance.

Have mirrors across from front door.

Even if you don't follow the Chinese decorating philosophy of feng shui, a general rule is to not have mirrors directly facing your front door. It is said that doing this keeps money and opportunities out of your home. An alternative option is to add one on the same wall.

Place them everywhere across the home.

Mirrors are great for decorating, but be strategic where you place them. Too many in a space can reflect off of one another, causing glares and making spaces feel busy.
