Sensitive teeth can be inconvenient at best and painful at worst. There are a few common causes for this problem including: exposure of the root surfaces, erosion of the enamel, clenching and/or grinding of the teeth, and cavities. Fortunately, there are some simple, dentist-approved ways to relieve the discomfort of teeth sensitivity; below, a few of these methods are explored in more detail.

3 Ways to Alleviate the Pain of Sensitive Teeth

1. Use Specialized Toothpaste

There are several brands of toothpaste designed for people with sensitive teeth. They include ingredients like potassium nitrate and strontium chloride, both of which block pain from passing from the tooth surface to the nerve receptor inside. If you are suffering from sensitivity, it is also best to use a toothpaste with stannous fluoride instead of sodium fluoride.  Dentists advise making your specialized toothpaste your regular choice when brushing; only using it occasionally won't provide a noticeable result.  If you have been using a desensitizing toothpaste for more than 2 weeks and have not had a resolution of your symptoms, you should see your dentist.

2. Implement New Brushing Habits

dentistOne of the most common causes of root exposure, which can cause sensitivity, is improper brushing.  If your teeth are sensitive, it may be time to switch up how you brush. Make sure you're using a soft or extra soft bristled toothbrush.  The softer the bristles on your toothbrush, the better it will clean your mouth without irritating the teeth and gums.  Also, don't brush too enthusiastically; keep it light and easy, moving the brush in small, deliberate circles with only moderate pressure. Be certain you're brushing for a full two minutes as well. Anything less than that and you're not adequately removing the bacteria and acidic foods that could be increasing the sensitivity.

3. Wear a Nightguard

Grinding and clenching are other possible reasons for sensitive teeth. Often, people do this in their sleep and aren't even aware of it. But over time, grinding one's teeth will cause the enamel to erode and the gums to recede. Wearing a nightguard to bed will reduce grinding or clenching and its impact on the teeth. It is important to find a nightguard that fits well and is not too soft. Using a soft appliance like a sports mouthguard can cause TMJ or muscle problems.  Most dentists can fit you with a custom-made nightguard that integrates seamlessly with the contours of your mouth.

4.  Visit your Dentist

If you have tried the sensitivity toothpastes and changed the way you are brushing with no relief of your symptoms, you should see your dentist to make sure there is not a more serious problem.  Many times the first sign of tooth decay is sensitivity to cold, sweet, or acidic foods and drinks.  If left untreated the symptoms can progress from mild sensitivity to severe pain.  Dental professionals also have access to stronger desensitizing treatments than are available over-the-counter.
