When cooking and entertaining for Thanksgiving, you want an organized space to work with. For many homeowners, this means decluttering your kitchen before the holidays are in full swing. If you’re getting ready for this busy time of year, use the guide below to make your kitchen work for your needs.

Do:

Declutter the countertops.

If your kitchen is like many people’s, the countertops are some of the trickier areas to keep clear of clutter. Taking advantage of wall, ceiling, and cabinet space will allow you to organize this area. Install a hanging basket planter and relocate any vegetables or fruits usually sitting on your counters. Add shelves along empty wall space, and add racks to the inside of cabinet doors to easily keep track of essential items without having them take up valuable counter space.

Group pantry items into categories.

When you randomly throw items into your pantry, it can take much longer than necessary to track down what you’re looking for. Dividing the area into categories is a common decluttering tactic. Take everything out of the pantry and begin organizing based on how often you use each type of item. School and work lunch items may need to be accessible daily, while baking supplies and specialty seasonings may be better stored out of the way.

Don’t:

Hold on to old or unneeded items.

If you bought specific ingredients a while ago with the intentions of making a recipe and never did, they’re probably just taking up valuable space now. Donate unopened and in-date goods, and throw away empty containers and bags that have no use.

Avoid calling an organization expert.

Decluttering can be stressful for many people. If you find you have no idea where to start, call in a professional. A home organization expert will custom design the inside of your pantry, cabinets, and closets to make your pantry items more accessible and your home feel more relaxed.
