If your tooth is cracked or needs extensive fillings, an emergency dentist may recommend a porcelain crown to protect it. The solution is durable but can still be damaged if you aren’t careful. To make it last as long as possible, make the following teeth cleaning and lifestyle changes.

How to Care for Your Crown

1. Clean Carefully

Teeth CleaningYou must brush and floss the dental crown as you would a natural tooth. However, it has edges and seams where it has been attached and can come loose if treated roughly during teeth cleaning. Don’t snap floss between your crown and the surrounding teeth; instead, carefully slide it around the sides of each tooth, making a U-shape with the string.

2. Watch What You Eat

Most foods are safe with a permanent crown. But, chewing on hard items, such as ice, nutshells, and non-food objects like pencils, can crack the porcelain. You should also avoid eating anything too sticky while wearing a temporary crown, as caramel or taffy can pull it out. This is less of a problem with permanent or same day crowns.

3. Avoid Staining

The porcelain used for dental crowns is resistant to stains but can still be discolored over time. Too much coffee, tea, cola, or red wine will darken the surface, as will tomato sauce and curry. Tobacco is one of the worst products for discoloring both teeth and dental prosthetics. Avoid these items or limit your intake as much as possible.
