The possibility of snow is nearly here, and that means your tires will need to keep you safe on slippery roads. Snow and ice can make your vehicle more difficult to handle, and your tires need special prep to keep you safe while on the road. Here are some tips that will get your car ready for the cold weather this season.

Here’s How to Get Your Tires Ready for Winter

1. Check the Tread

The grooves of your tire are responsible for channeling snow, ice, and water. When the tread on your tires has worn too thin, your car will have more difficulty gripping the road. This puts you at risk for slipping and skidding, leading to a possible collision.

tiresYour tires should typically have around 4/32 of an inch of tread—once they reach 2/32 of an inch, they will need to be changed right away. Before the first snow hits, use the penny test to check your tire tread. Place a penny upside down in one of your tire grooves, and make sure the head is facing you. If you can see all of Lincoln’s head, your tires have worn too thin and need to be changed.

2. Check the Air Pressure

Tires that are over or underinflated also pose a risk while on the road. Colder weather causes your tires to lose inflation, which can cause too much of your tire to touch the road. This increases friction, leading to premature wear and the risk of a blowout. Alternatively, when there’s too much pressure in your tires, hitting a bump or curb too hard can cause a blowout.

3. Consider Buying Snow Tires

For the ultimate safety while driving around this winter, consider investing in snow tires. These sets feature deeper treads that will enable your vehicle to better grip the road. They’re also made from more durable rubber and can withstand the temperature changes that occur during the wintertime.
