Dental whitening treatments are a quick way to brighten your smile and boost your confidence. But once you leave your dentist’s office, you need to practice proper aftercare to maintain your teeth whitening results and minimize future discoloration. Here are some basic tips to keep your pearly whites as bright as possible.

Do:

Follow your dentist’s instructions.

When you leave your dentist’s office, they will give you specific aftercare instructions, which you should follow to achieve optimal results. They may also recommend you come back for additional whitening treatments, so make any future appointments ahead of time.

Continue brushing and flossing.

Just because your teeth are whiter than ever does not mean you can relax your hygiene routine. After teeth whitening, brush and floss your teeth as you normally would to get rid of plaque and remove any stains that have not yet set.

Avoid colored toothpaste.

Especially in the first 24 hours, avoid using colored toothpaste or mouthwash. These can potentially stain the surface of your teeth. Ask your dentist about which toothpaste they recommend to help your teeth retain brightness.

Don’t:

Eat staining foods.

To ensure your teeth remain white, avoid these items entirely in the first 24 hours. In general, enjoy them in moderation and rinse your mouth afterward.

Smoke.

Smoking is one of the worst habits for your teeth and health. If you haven’t already, stop smoking as soon as possible to keep your teeth white, reduce your risk of oral cancer, and protect your overall health.

Hesitate to call your dentist.

Remember that your dentist is available if you experience any issues following your whitening treatment. If you are concerned about additional staining, teeth sensitivity, or how to best care for your teeth in general, make an appointment. They can recommend a change in your dental care routine to keep your teeth healthy and white.
