Even if you've taken efforts to clean and maintain your roof, accidents can happen. Storms, especially, can cause damage when you least expect it. If your house has recently been hit with extreme weather, here are some steps you can take to assess your roof's condition. If you notice any problems, call a roofing contractor to ensure that they don't get worse.

4 Steps to Dealing With a Storm-Damaged Roof

1. Stay Safe

Safety should always be your priority. Wear close-toed shoes and venture onto the lawn with caution, keeping an eye out for broken glass, exposed nails, or downed power lines. Do not attempt to get on the roof for a closer look.

2. Visually Survey the Damage

Visually survey the roof, looking for signs of split seams, missing or broken shingles, and cracks. Check the gutters for dents and breakage as well. Lastly, inspect the attic for leaks or signs of moisture or mildew. Severe issues will require immediate attention to prevent water damage, while less significant problems, such as hail dents, may not require emergency repairs. If water is leaking into your property, try to stop it by putting a tarp or caulk over the hole to temporarily stop water from entering.

3. Notify Insurance

Even if it’s in the middle of the night, it’s important to file a claim as soon as possible. Most insurance companies have an emergency hotline you can call if your regular agent is not available. They’ll help you file the claim and arrange for an appraiser to visit and assess the extent of repair costs. Typically, once the appraiser files their official report, the insurance company will begin working with your contractor.

4. Call a Roofing Contractor

Finally, find a commercial roofing contractor to complete repairs. If there are urgent problems, such as a missing section of roofing, siding, or gutters, call an emergency contractor. Ask your insurance company for recommendations if needed.
