Golf is the rare sport that is both relaxing and energizing, engaging without being cutthroat, and leisurely while still a brisk workout. If you're ready to hit the green for the first time, you're in for a treat, but any beginning golfer needs to know the ropes. To help you get started, here is a simple guide to golf.

A Quick-Start Guide to Playing Golf

1. Get in Some Practice Rounds

Practice does make perfect—and if not perfect, then at least not a total novice. Get in as many practice rounds as you can. Try putting in your living room, test your swing in the backyard, and experiment with different types of clubs. There's no strict protocol to follow here—just get comfortable with the movements and equipment.

2. Start Small

golfYou may be anxious to play a full round of golf your first time out. While there's no rule against that, many beginners prefer to start small and work their way up. Start by playing three holes. Take them at a steady pace, and see how you do. When you've gotten into the swing of the game, expand your scope to include more holes and, eventually, the putting green.

3. Use the Right Equipment

At first, there's no need for an elaborate set of clubs. A quality driver, putter, and sand wedge are more than sufficient to give you a solid foundation in the sport. Plus, it's easier to carry three clubs than a bag stocked with 14 of them along with accessories that a beginning golfer doesn't need quite yet.

4. Know the Score & Lingo.

There's no reason why a beginning golfer shouldn't be an informed one. Learn how golfers keep score and gain a working knowledge of golfing vocabulary, so you can keep your head in the game.

5. Be a Good Sport

Be mindful that you're sharing the course with other players. Be courteous, replace your divots, and always be aware of where you're standing. Shake hands and congratulate the winner of your game, and, in general, exhibit sportsmanlike behavior. It counts for more than you might think, and, after all, you’re out here to have a good time.

Once you’re ready to start practicing, head over to Waikoloa Village Association. The Big Island golf course offers affordable rates for both residents and tourists as well as rental equipment and supplies. At 1,000 feet of elevation, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding Kohala mountains and Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa, Hualalai volcanoes.
