Autumn brings with it plenty of opportunities for leaves, dirt, and mud to enter your home. If you’re not careful, this unwanted debris can accumulate on your carpeting, giving your home an aged, unkempt appearance. To help you maintain your flooring even when the weather gets messy, here’s some useful insight.

Guide to Maintaining Clean Carpeting During the Fall

1. Enforce a No-Shoe Policy

Enforcing a no-shoe policy indoors will immediately cut down on the dirt and grime you’d otherwise have to reckon with daily. Keep a small area rug by the doorway or add a shoe rack so guests can remove their dirty shoes upon entering the home.

2. Vacuum Regularly

carpetingEven without shoes, dust and debris will accumulate on your carpeting. To keep these unwanted irritants to a minimum, vacuum at least once a week. Carefully pass over highly trafficked areas about two or three times to lift any hard-to-reach debris hiding in the fibers. For less trafficked areas, one quick pass should be sufficient, but don’t forget to vacuum the corners as well.

3. Address Stains in Between Carpet Cleanings

A regular carpet cleaning is ideal, but in between these appointments, it’s helpful to pre-treat any stains as they crop up. To create an effective cleaner, mix a bit of detergent with hot water in a spray bottle and mist any stains lightly. Always let the mixture sit for up to 10 minutes before cleaning so it has a chance to penetrate through the carpet fibers. While cleaning, avoid any vigorous rubbing and use gentle blotting motions instead.

4. Schedule a Deep Clean

Even with frequent cleanings and removing stains immediately, the best solution for a fresh carpet is to call in the professionals for a deep clean. Using commercial-grade machines and solutions, a professional will remove dirt and grime embedded within the carpet fibers. In just a few hours, your carpets will look and smell like new, removing allergens and keeping your family healthy. Depending on how big your household is and the level of foot traffic, schedule a cleaning every two to three years.
