Many women go through their monthly menstrual periods with minimal inconvenience or discomfort. That being said, it’s also incredibly common for some women to experience premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and have cramping, nausea, headaches, and loose stool. If you’re concerned about your monthly menstrual pain, here’s what your OBGYN wants you to know so you can mediate the issue and better understand when it’s time to schedule an appointment at a women’s health care center.

Understanding Menstrual Cramps & How to Mediate Them

What Causes Menstrual Cramps?

During your period, your uterine muscles contract in order to expel the lining. This process requires the assistance of prostaglandins, a hormone-like substance that can also trigger pain and inflammation. When higher levels of prostaglandins are released, you’re more likely to experience painful cramping as your uterus contracts and begins the flow of blood.

OBGYNIn some cases, excessive and painful cramping during your period can also be a result of other conditions including noncancerous growths, known as fibroids, on your uterus; a pelvic infection caused by sexually transmitted bacteria; a small cervix that impedes blood flow; or endometriosis, a condition in which the tissue that lines your uterus becomes implanted outside your uterus.

How Do OBGYNs Recommend Treating Your Symptoms?

If you’re experiencing mild menstrual cramping, your OBGYN may recommend taking over-the-counter pain medication and applying a hot water bottle over your stomach to ease the discomfort. Studies have shown that exercise can help relieve cramps as well. Should your cramps be consistent and impact your ability to go about daily activities, schedule an appointment at a women’s health care clinic to better understand the cause of your cramping. Depending on the outcome, your OBGYN may recommend going on hormonal birth control. If the pain is a result of endometriosis, your doctor may recommend surgery.
