Whether you recently started wearing contact lenses or are thinking about getting them, they require proper hygiene. Failing to clean or switch out contacts regularly can result in a variety of vision problems. Learn below what optometrists recommend for getting the most out of your lenses without sacrificing your eye health.

Cleaning Your Contacts

Always wash your hands with soap and water before handling contacts. Afterward, dry your hands off with a microfiber towel. Place the first lens in your palm, apply solution, then rub the contact clean in your palm. Rinse it a second time before inserting it into your eye, then repeat the steps with the other lens.

Aiea Contact LensesBefore you put contacts away, rinse their case with fresh solution and let it air-dry with the top off. Once there is no moisture left, add more solution to the case before placing the contacts inside. Never keep the old liquid, which may be contaminated. The American Optometric Association recommends replacing your case every three months

Changing Your Lenses

How often you change your contact lenses depends on the type and brand you use. For example, daily disposables should be exchanged for new ones every day. Weekly disposables have a wear period of one to two weeks, while monthly disposables need changing every four weeks. Ask your eye doctor how often to swap your traditional disposable or hard lenses. You can also refer to the instructions on your lens packaging.

Risks of Improper Care

Failing to change or clean your contacts properly can result in discomfort, excessive tearing, and blurry vision. You can even develop corneal ulcers and eye infections. Severe infections can lead to blindness. If you have trouble keeping up with your hygiene routine or experience frequent dryness, watering, or sensitivity to light, talk to your optometrist. They may recommend a different type of lens or suggest eyeglasses.
