White teeth can make your smile look clean and well-kept, but unfortunately, you can have too much of a good thing. Occasionally, people develop white spots on their teeth, making their smile look mottled. Here are three causes of white spots on teeth, and how your dentist can help you to resolve problems.

Causes of White Teeth

1. Enamel Demineralization

Healthy enamel is hard and white, protecting the delicate inner portions of the teeth from damage. Unfortunately, if the teeth are subjected to acids or physical damage, dental enamel can lose minerals such as calcium and phosphorus, causing the area to lighten. Encourage remineralization by working with your dentist. In addition to polishing your dental hygiene routine, dentists can prescribe special toothpastes with remineralization compounds, encouraging microscopic healing.

2. Excess Fluoride

One common cause of white spots on teeth is dental fluorosis, a condition that occurs when the teeth absorb too much fluoride. Although it is most common in children, fluorosis can occur in adults and creates a lacy, chalky, white appearance on the surface of the teeth. Although many white spots caused by fluorosis can’t be removed, dentists can improve their appearance by polishing the surface of the teeth with MI paste, a product that contains calcium phosphate. Dentists can also correct fluorosis by covering the teeth with crowns, veneers, or composites.

3. Malnutrition

dentistCertain dietary imbalances can also cause white spots to form on the teeth, since shortages of calcium can make it difficult for the teeth to form dental enamel properly. Focus on eating a varied, mineral-rich diet, and always drink plenty of water.
