Diners have a home in almost every town in the US. They’re a quintessential part of Americana, and a place where people visit every day for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and good company. While they can seem like regular restaurants at times, they have a fascinating history behind them that represents the entrepreneurial spirit and ingenuity of America.

Walter Scott

The roots of the American diner date back to the 19th Century in Providence, Rhode Island. Walter Scott, a local lifelong peddler, realized that nightshift workers required food but had no open establishments to buy from. Recognizing an opportunity, he fashioned a roofed wagon as a makeshift restaurant, and in 1972, began selling sandwiches, coffee, and other foods to hungry patrons. Other residents quickly caught on to Scott’s idea, and the American diner was born.

Settling Down

Mobile diners thrived throughout New England and created competition with restaurants as they began selling breakfast. When local police began complaining of outdoor crowds at night, diners settled down as stationary establishments built from their dining cars. These gradually became more ornate, and the word “diner” was coined in 1923 when they began selling breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Modern Diners

They became family establishments where people gathered each day to enjoy meals among common company and were designed so that patrons felt at home. Companies began replicating successful diners, eventually leading to restaurant chains and the fast-food drive-throughs of today.
