It’s common for a stump to be left behind after a tree has fallen or has been cut down. This can create an eyesore on the property, and it also allows the roots to re-sprout around the stump. Stump grinding is an effective method for removing both of these issues.

How Is Stump Grinding Different From Removal?

While they sound similar, grinding and removal are different methods for getting rid of stumps. The first technique employs a grinder to shave the stump until all that remains are tiny pieces. Afterward, the remaining portion is covered with dirt and dust. Over time, the buried wood and root system will decay, naturally stopping growth and enriching the soil. The second process involves immediately removing the entire stump and its accompanying root ball, which can be four to ten times the size of the tree, all at once.

Why Is Stump Grinding Better?

stump grindingStump removal requires a lot of time and hard work. It can take a while to dig up an entire root system. Then when it is fully removed, you are left with a large hole in your yard. Though many homeowners do not like the idea of leaving a hole in their lawn, it can be the better option if you want to plant a new tree in the same area.

In most instances, though, stump grinding is preferred. It can be completed quickly and doesn’t leave a cavern on your property. Additionally, the shavings from the stump can be used as mulch to protect your flower beds and other plants. If you are not in a rush to plant new trees, grinding may be the better choice.
