Vinyl siding remains a popular building material for homes in the U.S.  due to its durability and versatility. But like other siding materials, it accumulates its fair share of grime, stains, mold, and mildew. Fortunately, maintaining vinyl siding is a relatively easy job. Here are some tips that will help.

How to Keep Your Vinyl Siding Looking New

1. Clean Your Siding Annually

Keep your exterior looking new by cleaning it at least once a year. A soft-bristle scrub brush or sponge is ideal for cleaning the surface. For hard-to-reach places, a long-handled brush should be sufficient. Rinse well to avoid staining.

2. Use a Power Washer

Cleaning the siding with a pressure washer is faster and more efficient than scrubbing it with a sponge. Keep in mind that light-gauge vinyl siding may not be able to withstand the pressure generated by a power washer. Make sure you read the manufacturer's instructions to know the correct psi (pressure per square inch) setting to use. For a thorough, hassle-free cleaning without any of the worry, have a professional do the job for you.

3. Use the Right Cleaning Solutions

Regular household cleaners such as Lysol® and Windex® are a better option. You can also make your own cleaning solution by mixing 70% water and 30% white vinegar.

4. Protect From Possible Damage

Vinyl is a synthetic material that doesn't rot like wood, but it's susceptible to punctures or cracks. Look out for things that could damage it. Trim nearby shrubs and trees so the branches won't scrape against the vinyl. And keep your BBQ grill a safe distance away from the siding when in use to prevent heat damage.

5. Check for Breaks or Cracks

Even after taking precautions, a piece of your siding might come loose after a storm, or cracks could appear due to simple age. Inspect your siding for breaks at least twice a year, as these can expose your home to the elements or leave it susceptible to mold and pest infestation. If there’s any damage, turn to a vinyl siding expert for repairs.
