When most homeowners think about caring for their septic system, they think about the tank rather than the leach field. However, your drain field is a major part of the system that needs to be kept in top condition. See a few of the most common reasons for leach field repair so you know how to prevent and deal with them.

A Guide to Drain Field Problems

1. Tree Roots

septic systemYour drain field releases filtered waste into the soil, which has nutrients that tree roots are drawn to. The roots will find any cracks in the plumbing and force their way inside, causing a blockage. Prevent this problem by planting trees a safe distance away from your leach field as well as any other parts of your septic system. Most trees’ roots can grow as far as they are tall, so know how high a tree is expected to get and plant it farther away than that distance.

2. Blocked Plumbing

When the plumbing in your drain field gets blocked, the entire system will back up into your home or make your drains run slowly. You can prevent blockage inside the plumbing by never pouring grease, fat, paint, or any oils down the drain. You can also prevent sludge buildup by having your septic tank pumped on the appropriate schedule; it’s recommended every three to five years for most homes.

3. Compacted Soil

The soil in your drain field is set up to filter the waste as it’s released, and if it gets compacted, the waste can’t drain properly. You may know it’s compacted if there’s a strong sewage smell by your leach field, puddles are visible, or if the area seems unusually lush. Avoid this by never driving vehicles over the field or letting livestock walk over it.
