A broken bone, or fracture, occurs when too much external pressure causes a bone to split or splinter. There are several kinds of fractures, each one possessing a different degree of severity. Learn more about the five common types of broken bones in the guide below.

5 Kinds of Bone Fractures

1. Stable Fractures

Stable fractures are the least serious and most easily mended. The ends of the broken bone still more or less line up. Because of their close proximity and relative evenness, they usually knit back together quicker than other kinds of breaks.

2. Open, Compound Fractures

With open, compound fractures, the skin is broken along with the bone. You may even see the bone protruding from the wound. This type of fracture must be tended to quickly because the open wound heightens the risk for infection.

3. Transverse Fractures

4. Oblique Fractures

Oblique fractures possess an angled or diagonal pattern. They are most prevalent in the longer bones of the body, such as the femur or tibia.

5. Comminuted Fractures

With a comminuted fracture, the bone has shattered into at least three pieces. These breaks most often occur after severe, blunt-force trauma, such as a motor vehicle accident or a fall from a significant height. Comminuted fractures typically require surgery to restructure the bone and facilitate proper healing.
