Bladder infections are caused by excess bacteria in the urinary tract and can be quite uncomfortable. If you were recently diagnosed with a bladder infection, you might be searching for the cause. Fortunately, by understanding some of the most common causes of these infections, you can take preventative steps in the future.

What Are Some Common Causes of Bladder Infections?

Barrier Contraception

If you use a diaphragm or other barrier contraceptive method, you’re at higher risk for a bladder infection. This is particularly true when barrier methods are used with spermicide. Patients who are experiencing frequent infections should talk to their gynecologist about switching their birth control.

Bubble Baths

bladder infectionsWhile bubble baths are a great way to unwind at the end of the day, your soap may be causing bladder or urinary tract infections. This is because many scented soaps can affect the pH of the vagina, urethra, and bladder. By switching to a mild, unscented, pH balance soap, you can soak in the tub without affecting the urethra and bladder.

Sexual Intercourse

Frequent sexual intercourse, a new sexual partner, and not urinating after sexual activity can all contribute to your risk of bladder infections. To limit the bacteria that moves into your urinary tract and bladder, be sure to practice proper sexual hygiene. Always urinate after sexual activity and wipe front to back. It’s also beneficial to wear loose cotton underwear to stay cool and prevent bacterial growth.

Remember: If you are experiencing a burning sensation while urinating, pelvic pain, frequent urge to urinate, cloudy or bloody urine, and any of the other symptoms of bladder infections, be sure to visit your doctor.
