Ponds are lovely additions to any property, but they require regular upkeep to maintain their beauty and functionality. Before the end of the season, it’s vital to perform pond maintenance to ensure it survives the coming winter. Otherwise, issues like standing water result in a breeding ground for bacteria, algae, and insects. Below are a few steps you can take this fall.

How to Prepare Your Pond for Winter

1. Test Water Quality

As part of routine pond maintenance, have the quality frequently tested to ensure fish thrive and prevent the water from turning muddy. Use a testing kit to determine the levels of ammonia, chloramines, and chlorine, as considerable amounts of these chemicals can kill the fish.

2. Install Netting

Skim floating dead leaves and flowers, and trim overgrown plants nearby that might fall into the water. Remove submerged plants that are dying, as decaying debris adds to algae growth. Catch falling leaves from surrounding plants and trees by securing netting over the pond.

3. Reduce Fish Feeding

Their digestion slows during cold weather, and undigested food in their gut can harm them. Moreover, uneaten scraps will decay and add to algae growth. During the winter season, consider transferring some of your fish to a temporary indoor holding tank to increase their chance of survival.

4. Clean the Pond, Filters, & Pumps

If you haven’t cleaned out your pond in summer and spring, fall is your last chance to do so. Drain the water, if necessary, and hose down muck buildup and algae growth on the sides and at the bottom. Clean the filters and pumps and ensure they’re free from clogs and debris.

5. Ensure Proper Aeration

Pumps maintain circulation while providing oxygen to your fish. But, if you want to increase aeration, then invest in a bubbler. You may also add some aquatic bunch plants to boost the water’s oxygen levels.

Regular pond maintenance will ensure your investment stays beautiful and a long-lasting addition to the landscape.
