Unlike some plumbing problems, like a leaky faucet or clogged drain, a lack of hot water is always sudden. You don’t get a subtle heads-up that it’ll happen. Fortunately, a water heater problem can usually be attributed to three parts, which you can check with the following instructions.

3 Parts to Check When Your Water Heater Is Malfunctioning

1. Circuit Breaker

Before you suspect the water heater itself, check whether the circuit breaker has tripped, which tends to happen when the system gets overloaded or there’s been a blackout. If it has tripped, resetting it usually solves the problem. Try running the water again. The breaker should stay in the “on” position, but if it immediately trips again, seek professional assistance.

2. Heating Elements

plumbingIf the circuit breaker isn’t the problem, it’s time to shift your focus to the water heater. When the water runs cold, a heating element may be broken. Most models have two: one near the top of the tank and another near the bottom. They are located behind a removable metal cover. If you have a multimeter, you can test whether the heating elements have gone bad. Just make sure to shut the power off at the circuit breaker first. If the heating elements no longer work, they can be replaced.

3. Thermostats

If the heating elements are fine, the thermostat is likely to blame. There are two of them positioned at the top and bottom of the water tank. Testing them requires the multimeter as well, but their location deep inside the tank makes them difficult to access, so it’s best to have a plumbing professional handle it. They can be replaced if necessary.
