If you’ve never undergone spinal adjustments, it’s natural to feel anxious before your first visit to a chiropractor. Fortunately, knowing what to expect before, during, and after the appointment can ease a lot of the stress. Although all patients who seek chiropractic care have unique needs, there are certain things everyone can anticipate about their first visit.

Before Your Visit

To prepare for your first spinal adjustment, write down any questions you have for the chiropractor. It is also wise to take note of any troublesome symptoms because your provider will want to know about them. And since you will have to discuss your medical history, write down things like allergies, prescription medication, past surgeries, and injuries that never healed properly.

During the Appointmentchiropractor

After filling out some paperwork upon your arrival, the chiropractor will ask about the reason for your visit and what your ultimate goals are. He or she will then perform a thorough exam to assess the situation and propose possible treatments. Depending on the circumstances, x-rays or other testing may also be required. Once the exam is complete, treatment can begin that same day. It might include soft tissue therapy, physiotherapy, and/or spinal adjustments.

After Your Visit

Some minor discomfort is normal following a visit to the chiropractor. If your spine was severely misaligned, for example, your body likely compensated for it and must now adjust to the correction. Icing any uncomfortable areas for 20 minutes at a time can help. Any pain should not last for more than a day or so, though. If it does, call your chiropractor because finer adjustments may be needed. Otherwise, follow any guidelines you received until the next session. This might include correcting your posture, investing in ergonomic cushions, or performing certain exercises every day.
