Vehicular collisions with deer have terrible consequences. Careful drivers always watch out for deer crossing, but it’s important to be especially careful during their mating season, which runs from October through December. Deer are more active during this time, reaching peak activity in November – meaning you’ll see more of them on your commute soon. Remaining generally vigilant will reduce the likelihood of accidents, but below are a few additional steps you can take to stay safe.

3 Ways to Avoid Deer Collisions

Keep an Eye Out for Deer Crossing Signs

In areas with high deer populations, there should be deer crossing signs posted. Even if you don’t see deer, these warning signs let you know to exercise caution and drive slowly through the area. Keeping both hands firmly placed on the steering wheel and eyes on the road will help increase your response time if you see a deer in the distance and help you avoid a collision.

Use High-Beam Headlights at Dawn & Dusk

Deer have several natural predators, so they often feed at dusk East-Rochester-New-York-collisionand dawn under the protective cover of darkness. They also eat more in fall to store fat for winter. Because deer are most active before the sun is fully up, remember to use high-beam headlights to illuminate roadways. This will improve visibility, so you’ll see deer approaching. Turn them off when cars pass to prevent blinding other drivers.

Remember to Make Noise

Deer live in herds, so if you see one, you should assume there are more nearby. Deer are skittish. If you see deer in the road, press on your car horn. The noise will prompt the deer to move, and startle any others nearby, prompting them to run away from the commotion. For added protection, consider installing a deer horn or whistle on the car. Deer whistles mount to the exterior of your vehicle. When you drive at certain speeds, air passes through the whistle to create a loud noise that wards off deer.
