Whether used as your main mode of transportation or for leisurely rides on the weekends, there are several benefits to owning a motorcycle. With both hands planted on the handlebars, it’s virtually impossible to text or talk on the phone while driving, making for fewer dangerous distractions. Depending on how frequently you ride, fuel economy could also be better when compared to a car. Similar to automobiles, motorbikes need upkeep to remain safe and reliable. Below is a guide to motorcycle parts you should have serviced regularly.

5 Motorcycle Parts That Top the Maintenance Checklist

1. Brake Pads

Motorcycles feature drum or disc braking systems. Due to efficient stopping capabilities, disc brakes are often used to stay safe on wet, slick roadways. Brake pads make contact with brake discs, or rotors, to create friction. The friction materials lining the pad will wear over time. That’s why the motorcycle part should be inspected for signs of thinning during service checks.

2. Tires

Having tires with good tread helps the rubber grip the road to prevent sliding. Air pressure should also be checked, as riding with an under-inflated tire could cause a flat.

3. Final Drive Components

Motorcycles use chain, shaft drive, or belt systems. They are the final components activated to transport power from the engine to the rear wheel. The chain is connected to two sprockets, one on the rear wheel and the other on the gearbox. The chain requires oil for lubrication, which means it needs regular cleaning to prevent grime buildup. The tension of the chain should also be checked. With a shaft system, a gear in the gearbox is connected to a gear inside a hub on the rear wheel via a shaft. It also needs to be inspected for signs of damage. When the belt drive is examined, technicians rotate the rear wheel to check the surface for cracks and tears.

4. Spark Plugs

Inside the head of the cylinder, the spark plug transmits electrical energy. An electrical spark ignites a mixture of air and fuel. When spark plugs are failing, it could lead to problems with engine performance. If you experience a misfire while riding, it might be time to replace the spark plugs.

5. Battery

The battery supplies the bike with energy to prevent stalling on the road. Comprised of cells encased in a plastic box, this motorcycle part is typically located near or under the seat. To extend its life expectancy, the battery should be cleaned and charged regularly.
