A smooth drive is more than a luxury, it’s an indication that your car is in good shape. When you’re driving, the only time you should feel agitation is when you’re on a bumpy road. When you’re idle, whether it’s at a stop light or in a parking space, there shouldn’t be any wobbling at all. Of course, when the engine is running, a bit of vibration is normal but if the car is shaking and shuddering much more than it usually does, head to an auto repair shop. There are a few common causes, such as those listed below, but you’ll need a professional to properly diagnose the issue.

Why Cars Shake When Idling

Engine

Abnormal vibrational can usually be traced to the engine, especially the spark plugs. Old or worn-down spark plugs can make your car seem sluggish and cause it to sputter. They should be replaced every 80,000 to 100,000 miles. There’s also a chance a dirty air filter is fouling the spark plugs. When it gets clogged, excess dirt can’t be captured and can end up on the spark plugs. A new air filter should suffice, and if the spark plugs are still relatively new, an auto repair technician may be able to clean them. However, if they’re nearing the end of their life span, it’s best to just replace them as well.

Belts

When any of them are loose, misaligned, or worn out, they often cause abnormal vibrations as well as high-pitched, squealing sounds. Unless they’ve caused additional damage to nearby components, switching them out with newer replacement belts usually solves the problem.

Hoses

Damaged hoses may also be the issue. They transport fluids like coolant, transmission fluid, and brake fluid. When they’re leaking, your engine won’t get what it needs to run properly, and it could cause a domino effect throughout your car. Aside from idling, you may also notice some shaking when accelerating or decelerating.
