While no one will dispute the utility of the dumpster, where exactly did these devices originate? You may be surprised by the history, which stemmed from the need for more hygienic trash removal in the early 20th century. Enter pioneer George Dempster, who created perhaps the greatest innovation the waste management industry has ever seen.

Who Is George Dempster?

George Dempster wore a lot of hats. This businessman/politician/inventor owned Dempster Brothers, Inc., which was primarily involved in construction. As a result, Dempster had quite a bit of knowledge of the challenges associated with trash hauling, which led to his most notable invention.

DumpsterThe dumpster was the solution to Dempster’s woes. Created in 1936, this invention was immediately popular, and even though it was only intended to be used on Dempster’s own work site, his company soon received order after order. As a result, Dempster pooled all of his available resources into dumpster production and innovation.

Introducing the Dempster Dumpmaster

By the 1950s, Dempster had developed the dumpster even further. It was at this point where he created the Dempster Dumpmaster, which combined his previous invention with a front-loading truck. This invention made short work of trash, garbage, and junk removal by allowing the operator to dump the bin directly into a truck without exiting the vehicle.

Not only did this make for far more efficient trash pickup, but it also helped contribute to a cleaner, more sanitary society. While few people are aware of the Dempster name, virtually everyone around the world recognizes the value of the dumpster.
