If you’ve noticed your dog scratching, they may have one of a few typical skin problems. Since these conditions do not usually clear up on their own, you need to know how to recognize them. Explore the list below, so you’ll know when it’s time to call your veterinarian

How to Spot Common Skin Problems in Dogs

1. Allergies

Environmental and food allergies are two common reasons for itchy skin in dogs. Some canines are sensitive to dust mites, grass, or pollen, which leads to irritation on areas like their faces, feet, ears, chest, or stomach. If your pet is allergic to a food protein, like beef, eggs, or chicken, they may experience gastrointestinal problems or an itchy behind. Call your veterinarian if you notice excessive itchiness. Watch out for vomiting and loose bowel movements as well. The vet may provide allergy medication or change their diet.

2. Hair Loss

Also known as alopecia, hair loss occurs in dogs just like humans. Signs include patches of missing fur or hair falling out in clumps from head to toe. Some dogs also develop crusty sores. Causes include immune system disorders, infections, and endocrine system problems. Any hair loss is abnormal and should be reported to your veterinarian.

Moist dermatitis, or hot spots, are usually from bacteria. If your dog excessively licks an area on their body, a wet scab will form on their fur. They could also get a hot spot from exposure to dirty water. Look for moist, raw skin and itching. Your dog may also behave abnormally or cry in pain. Antibiotics can quickly cure this problem.

4. Yeast Infections

This condition is caused by microorganisms and most commonly occurs in floppy-eared breeds like Cocker Spaniels and Basset Hounds. Typical sites of infection include the ear canal, the behind, and between the toes. In addition to itching, symptoms include red skin, foul odor, and hair loss. Your vet can provide topical treatments like shampoos or ointment.

5. Dull Coat

Most dull coats are because of poor nutrition. If your pet’s fur is less shiny than usual, ask your doctor for a food and vitamin consultation. A change in diet or addition of a supplement can help increase luster.
