Winter can do a number on your vehicle, and fall is a smart time to bring your vehicle into an auto shop for a tune-up and inspection. Not only are snow, ice, and sleet difficult to drive in, but they can also impact the way your vehicle performs. Here are some tips that will keep your car running smoothly and increase your odds of avoiding repairs at the auto shop this upcoming season.

1. Check Your Coolant & Antifreeze

Your vehicle’s antifreeze is responsible for keeping your engine from freezing during the winter months. When your levels are low, your engine is at risk for freezing, potentially leaving you stranded. Your car’s manual will clue you in to the antifreeze level your engine requires, including how to check it. If you find yourself stranded with a frozen engine, don’t hesitate to call for towing services by a trusted auto shop.

2. Inspect Your Tires

These elements channel through your tire grooves, helping to keep you safer in the event of a storm. However, when your tire tread is worn down, you are more at risk for slipping or collision. One of the easiest ways to check your tire tread is the penny test. Stick a penny head-side down in one of your tire grooves with the head facing you. If all of Lincoln’s head is visible, it’s time to replace your tires.

3. Change Your Oil

Thinner engine oil performs better in colder weather. If it has been a while since your last oil change, your oil may be thick or dirty from use. Consider having an oil change done as well as switching to an oil with a lower, cold-weather viscosity grade.
