October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. As such, now is the perfect time to focus on your health and schedule a mammogram to determine whether there are any signs of breast cancer. If you have yet to participate in this screening, here’s a list of do’s and don’ts to put you at ease and motivate you to set up an appointment.

Do:

Supplement mammogram screenings with self-exams.

If you’re under the age of 40, annual mammograms are not necessarily required if you’re healthy and do not have a family history of the disease. Continue to check your breasts for lumps and irregularities on a regular basis and see your doctor right away if you feel anything out of the ordinary.

Look into your family history.

MammogramDid you know your risk of getting breast cancer nearly doubles if your sister, mother, or daughter has been diagnosed? Explore your family’s medical history and stay in contact with your loved ones. If anyone is prone to breast cancer, schedule annual mammograms together.

Don’t:

Put off your mammogram.

While checking for lumps at home should be a crucial part of your breast cancer prevention routine, annual mammograms are your first line of defense. The screening allows doctors to identify issues early, which is potentially life-saving. According to the American Cancer Society, women over the age of 45 should get annual screenings. If you have a family history of breast cancer, start doing so at the age of 40.

Hesitate to ask your doctor questions.

Many patients are self-conscious when it comes to discussing breast health. Find a doctor you feel comfortable with and bring up any concerns. Establishing a strong rapport and a safe space to talk about your health is vital to prevention.
