How Can I Tell if an Antique Map Is Real?

Reproduction Notes

One of the easiest ways to detect a replica is to look for a small note below the border that indicates it’s a reproduction. Usually, the company that created it will be listed along with the date it was made.

Atlas Folds

Many antique maps were designed to fit inside an atlas. If there is a fold down the center, the map is likely legitimate and was once folded to fit inside a book. You should see wear at the corners where atlas pages were turned, as well as a binder’s stub, a strip of paper glued to the back of the map where it was set into the book. 

Plate Marks

Many authentic antique maps were made from copper engravings on plates that relied on pressure to transfer the image. Real antique maps made with copper engravings will have plate marks, an indentation around the map where the plate pressed against the paper during production. There shouldn’t be anything printed outside of the plate marks.

Color Maps

Antique color maps were typically colored by hand, while reproductions were colored by a machine, using a matrix of dots. Carry a magnifying glass when shopping for antique maps, so that you can look for these dots. 

Paper Stock

Many maps crafted before the 19th century were made with hand-laid paper. Paper pulp was poured into a wood frame with a cross-hatched wire mesh at the bottom that left a pattern on the paper called chain marks or chain links. Inspect the map for these markings. The paper will most likely look worn and discolored, with yellowing areas, worn edges, or other imperfections.
