When a natural disaster affects your region, you will do anything you can to get your family out of harm’s way. This is why most households have some sort of emergency evacuation plan. The next time you are going over your disaster preparedness, make sure that this plan includes your family pet. From pet microchipping to locating a shelter, there are plenty of ways that your family can protect your pet in the event of an emergency.

How Pet Owners Can Prepare For A Disaster

Schedule Pet Microchipping

pet microchippingDuring natural disasters, there is a chance that your pet may escape or be separated from your family. This is why you need a way to identify them. Microchipping is an effective and permanent way to identify your pet, increasing the chances of reuniting with them after the disaster.

Find an Emergency Shelter

If your family needs to evacuate quickly, you should never leave your pet behind. There are plenty of facilities and pet-friendly shelters that will take in your animal whether you are there or not. Some veterinarians also provide emergency boarding services. Do your research and find a shelter to include in your emergency plan.

Order A Rescue Sticker

Many organizations such as the ASPCA provide stickers on which you can indicate how many animals are in the home. When you have this sticker on a window, emergency crews will know to look for cats and dogs in their rescue efforts. These stickers can be life-saving during a fire or flood.

Pack An Emergency Kit

Fill a box with emergency pet supplies and put it in your car. This can include items like extra medication, pet bandages, a thermometer, soft towels, disinfectant solution, an extra leash, canned pet food, pet brushes, and water. When you have this kit already packed, you can simply bring your pet with you during an evacuation and trust that their basic needs will be covered.

Talk to Your Family

Remember that everyone in your household should know to include your pets in your emergency plan. This way, if you are injured or preoccupied, your spouse or older children can help get the pet ready. Be sure that everyone is aware that the animal has pet microchipping and of any medications your pet requires. You may also consider talking this plan over with your veterinarian.
