Halloween is a fun celebration of all things spooky; but if you’re thinking of wearing costume contact lenses, you may be in for a trick, not a treat. Some retailers dispense costume lenses as a one-size-fits-all accessory, but unless they have been prescribed by an eye care professional, they are not safe and can cause some horrifying effects. Here’s what you need to know about fashion contact lenses this Halloween.

Your Guide to Halloween Contact Lenses

What’s Wrong With Over-the-Counter Decorative Contacts?

Contact lenses aren’t fashion accessories or makeup; they’re medical devices regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The eyes are one of the most delicate and complex body parts, so it’s essential to wear only contacts approved by the FDA and prescribed by your eye doctor. Not all people are good candidates for contact lenses, so have an eye exam before buying a pair.

What Damage Can They Cause?

How Can You Safely Wear Contacts?

This doesn’t mean you have to forego colored contacts altogether. Have your eyes examined by a licensed eye care professional who will ensure your eyes are suitable for contacts. Get a prescription which includes brand name and lens measurements, and only purchase your lenses from a retailer who asks for a prescription. Follow proper contact lens care instructions to ensure they are clean and free of tears. Never share your contacts with others, and if you experience any discomfort or pain, remove the lenses immediately.
